Everything You Need to Know About Trademark Renewal

A trademark is an asset that can last forever—but only if you renew it.

1. The Timeline

A trademark is valid for 10 years from the date of application. You can apply for renewal within 6 months before the expiry date.

2. The Fees

  • E-filing Fee: ₹9,000 per class (Government Fee).
  • Late Filing: If you miss the deadline but are within 6 months after expiry, you can still renew by paying an additional surcharge (fine).

3. Restoration of Trademark

If you miss the renewal window and the 6-month grace period, your mark will be 'Removed'. You then have another 6 months to apply for Restoration. After 1 year of expiry, the mark is permanently cancelled and anyone can take your name.

Pro Tip: Set a calendar reminder for the 9th year of your registration to avoid losing your hard-earned brand identity.
