4 New GST Portal Features in September 2026 Every Business Must Know
Throughout September 2026, the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) deployed four technical updates and portal enhancements that streamline compliance and eliminate long-standing technical roadblocks.
1. 70% Auto-Population of FORM GST REG-01 for Additional Registrations (Same PAN)
Effective 1 September 2026 (with GSTN advisory issued 10 September 2026), expanding businesses applying for an additional GSTIN in the same State or across different States under the same PAN no longer need to re-enter redundant data.
The portal now automatically fetches and populates over 70% of registration fields directly from the primary registration, including:
- Legal name, trade name, and constitution of business
- Promoter and director identities, DINs, and KYC details
- Authorized signatory details and verified communications channels
Applicants only need to upload local premises proof (such as rent agreements or electricity bills) for the new branch.
2. IMS Credit Note "Pending" Status & Exact ITC Reversal Controls
With the rollout of the Invoice Management System (IMS) for the September 2026 return period, GSTN resolved a major industry friction point regarding supplier credit notes:
- The "Pending" Option: If a vendor issues a credit note that you are still reconciling or disputing, you can now mark the document as "Pending" for one return cycle, preventing premature reversal of your input tax credit.
- Exact ITC Reversal Entry: When accepting a credit note, if you did not claim 100% of the original invoice credit (due to eligibility caps or exempt supplies), you can now enter the exact portion of ITC actually availed earlier, ensuring GSTR-2B only reverses the proportionate credit.
3. Online Appeals (FORM GST APL-01) Against Zero-Demand Orders
Previously, taxpayers attempting to file a digital appeal against orders having ₹0 tax demand (such as orders rejecting registration amendments, canceling GSTINs, or rejecting pure procedural applications) were blocked by a portal validation requiring a positive numeric demand figure.
GSTN has resolved this defect: taxpayers can now seamlessly file first appeals under Section 107 against zero-demand adverse orders.
4. Mandatory emSigner v3.3 Upgrade for Digital Signatures (From 21 Sept 2026)
To support the latest cryptographic standards for Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) hardware tokens, GSTN released emSigner version 3.3.0. All taxpayers signing returns, refund applications, or registration amendments must upgrade to version 3.3 to prevent token detection errors.
