GST for Sole Proprietors: Simplified

Most small businesses in India start as sole proprietorships. GST is often their first formal legal step.

1. Required Documents

  • PAN & Aadhaar of the proprietor.
  • Address Proof of Business: Electricity bill or property tax receipt.
  • Consent Letter/NOC: If the place is owned by a relative.
  • Bank Proof: Cancelled cheque or statement.

2. The Process

  1. TRN Generation: Verification via OTP on mobile and email.
  2. Application Submission: Filling in business details and uploading photos.
  3. ARN Tracking: Tracking the Application Reference Number.
  4. Registration Certificate: Issued digitally by the tax officer.

3. Composition Scheme vs. Regular

Small proprietors with turnover up to ₹1.5 Crore can opt for the Composition Scheme, paying a flat 1-5% tax and filing quarterly returns with fewer hassles.

Expert Tip: Ensure your Aadhaar is linked to your mobile phone for seamless e-KYC during the application.
