The Freelancer's Guide to GST
Freelancing is now a mainstream career path in India. But as your income grows, so does your tax responsibility.
1. When is GST Mandatory for Freelancers?
- Service Threshold: If your annual income exceeds ₹20 Lakhs.
- Inter-state Sales: If you provide services to clients in another state (technically mandatory, but most wait for the 20L threshold).
- Export of Services: If you work with clients on Upwork/Fiverr or direct international clients, you need GST to avail 'Zero-Rated' benefits.
2. Benefits of Voluntary Registration
- Recover Tool Costs: Save 18% on your Apple laptop, your Adobe subscription, and your office chair by claiming Input Tax Credit.
- Work with Corporates: Most large Indian companies require their vendors to have a GSTIN.
3. Exporting Services? Don't forget the LUT!
If you have global clients, file a Letter of Undertaking (LUT). This allows you to bill them without adding 18% GST, keeping your rates competitive while you remain compliant.
Expert Tip: Always mention the place of supply correctly on your invoices to avoid issues during audits.
