Tax Audit Extended to 21 Oct 2026 & ITR to 21 Nov 2026: The Section 234A Interest Trap

On 28 September 2026, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) issued Circular No. 07/2026 (F. No. 225/128/2026/ITA-II) under Section 119 of the Income-tax Act, 1961.

The circular provides welcome relief by extending statutory filing deadlines for Assessment Year 2026-27 (Financial Year 2025-26) for audited enterprises and corporate entities. However, taxpayers must remain vigilant regarding the hidden Section 234A interest trap.

1. Revised Due Date Schedule for AY 2026-27

2. Beware the Section 234A Interest Trap!

While Circular 07/2026 extends the date to submit your ITR until 21 November 2026, it carries a critical statutory caveat:

Under the third proviso to Section 234A of the Income-tax Act, 1961, if the self-assessment tax liability remaining unpaid exceeds ₹1,00,000, interest under Section 234A at 1% per month or part of a month continues to accrue from the original due date (31 October 2026) until the date the return is actually filed and paid.

Practical Advisory for CFOs and Promoters:

Even if your final ITR will be uploaded in mid-November 2026, calculate your net tax liability and deposit 100% of your self-assessment tax via Challan 280 on or before 31 October 2026 to eliminate Section 234A interest completely.

3. Transition Note: Last Year for Form 3CD Before Income-tax Act, 2025

Financial Year 2025-26 (AY 2026-27) represents the final assessment cycle under the legacy Form 3CA/3CB-3CD framework.

From Tax Year 2026-27 onwards, under the enacted Income-tax Act, 2025, business tax audits under Section 63 transition to the newly unified Form No. 26.
